Sort Type Lab for Mac is sold directly, not through the App Store. You pay once, and the licence key arrives by email. On iPhone and iPad, Pro is bought in the app. See below.

One purchase covers every Mac you own. There is no subscription, no account, and no licence server that could ever be switched off. Updates within version 1 are included; paid major versions are planned every 18 to 24 months, and whether you buy one is up to you.

What the licence unlocks

• More than one font. Draw a family, try a variation, keep a sketch beside the real thing.
• Fonts ready to release. No trial mark. The file carries your family name, designer and licence. Export again and it is yours to ship.
• Variable fonts. One file, four axes: weight, width, slant and stroke. Try them in the preview; exporting needs Pro.
• Colour fonts. COLR/CPAL in one file, or one file per colour for apps that read no colour fonts.
• Sprite atlas for games. A .fnt table and a PNG in the BMFont layout that Godot, LÖVE, Phaser and libGDX read.
• Bitmap font (.bdf). The exchange format of the pixel type world, for terminals and retro tooling.
• Register fonts with the system. Register a font with macOS while you work on it, and it shows up in every app right away.

What you already get for free

One font, and the whole editor: drawing, spacing, kerning, and export to TrueType, OpenType, WOFF and the HTML preview. The exported file is complete and installable. It simply carries a “Trial” suffix in its family name, so it is not meant for release.

Payment is by card or PayPal. Licences are issued by hand, one at a time: your key arrives by email within 24 hours of payment.

How to activate

1. The key arrives by email and looks like SORT1.….
2. In the app: Sort Type Lab › Settings (⌘,) → Licence → paste the key → Activate. The same field also sits in the Pro sheet, next to the “Buy a licence …” button.
3. The command-line tool and the MCP server do not share the app’s preferences. They look in three places, in this order: the environment variable SORTTYPE_LICENCE, the file ~/.sorttype/licence, and the key you entered once in the app. Any one of them will do.

The check is offline. The app never phones home to verify a key.

iPhone and iPad

The iOS version comes from the App Store and is free to download. Pro is an in-app purchase there, paid once, and it stays with your Apple Account on every iPhone and iPad you own. It is separate from the Mac licence: a key does not unlock the iOS app, and a purchase in the App Store does not unlock the Mac.

Already bought it and the app still shows the free version? Open Settings → Purchase → Restore purchase.

Who you are buying from

The sale is handled by Link, LLC (formerly Lemon Squeezy) as merchant of record. Your invoice is in euros, but the payment itself is processed in US dollars at the day’s exchange rate. Lemon Squeezy adds no fee for this, but some banks charge a small foreign-currency fee, so your statement may differ slightly from the invoice. See the Impressum and the privacy policy.
